Torres Novas is a Portuguese city belonging to the district of Santarém, in the province of Ribatejo, in the central region and sub-region of the Middle Tagus.
It is the seat of the municipality of Torres Novas, with an area of 270 km² and 34,149 inhabitants (2021), of which approximately 13,600 live in the city, being subdivided into 10 parishes. The municipality is limited to the Northwest by the municipality of Ourém, to the East by Tomar, Vila Nova da Barquinha and Entroncamento, to the Southeast by Golegã, to the South by Santarém and to the West by Alcanena.
Two important courts were held in Torres Novas: those of 1438, gathered after the death of King Dom Duarte of Portugal, and those of 1535, in which the marriage contract of Infanta Dona Isabel was signed with Carlos V, Emperor of the Holy Empire Roman.
Regarding the antiquity of Torres Novas, it can be said that here, in the Aroeira cave, the oldest human remains in Portugal were found, namely a 400,000-year-old Homo heidelberguensis skull. There are many other traces of human presence, from the Paleolithic (such as the caves of Buraca da Moura and Oliveira or Lapa da Bugalheira), through the Neolithic to the Iron Age, are also documented.
In the municipality of Torres Novas there was a strong Roman presence, of which the ruins of "Vila Cardilium" (manorial residence of an agricultural nature) stand out, a national monument occupied from the 2nd to 4th centuries.
